Hunting Petal and Song Essences; Personalized Cancer Care

Hunting Petal and Song Essences; Personalized Flower Essences and Chronic Illness

I find in the quiet moments before dawn, when the first light filters through the pines and the air still holds the cool breath of night, something profound begins to happen in Florida swamps and forests. The land is singing, not just with the obvious calls of birds or the rustle of leaves, but with a deep, layered ecosystem terrain energetic that most of us never truly experience. For me, that song is essential medicine. And one of the most powerful ways I’ve found to capture it, preserve it, and share it is through my Sony PCM recorders, especially my older PCM-M10s and Clippy or LOM Mikro Usi microphones, paired intentionally with the ancient practice of gathering flower essences.

I have come to understood that flower essence work is never just about the flower itself. Nature and psyche when connected an balanced can be powerfully aligned. When we sit with a wild native bloom, listen to it, receive its essence without harvesting a single petal, and offer thanks, we are participating in a living energetic exchange with the Dao. But the flower does not exist in isolation. It grows within a full acoustic and energetic field: the wind moving through surrounding grasses, the insects, the distant frogs, the creak of branches, the subtle shifts in humidity and temperature that carry their own frequencies. If we ignore that larger field we miss much of the medicine. Dr. Leon Hammer referred to this as ‘the terrain’.

For Flower Essences to have the greatest effect, the patient should be free as much as possible of fear, anxiety, stress and worry. We use nature sounds, recorded from the flower’s immediate vicinity to help facilitate a fear-free treatment atmosphere.  Think back generations ago when our ancestors shared evening meals around the campfire.  As long as there were background calls of cicada, crickets and frogs our ancestor’s were mostly free of fear while their bodies intuitively read the surrounding terrain.  If however predators approached the insect and amphibian calls would then go suddenly silent and their amygdala would activate sympathetic fight or flight responses.  Today our bodies are still programmed to interpret our surroundings.  Nature sounds are significant when used to augment Flower Essence’s effects.

That is why I set up professional sound equipment around my flower essence gathering sites. The goal is not simply to make a nice nature recording. It is to “capture” the full ecosystem terrain energetics; the complete vibrational signature of the place in which the flower is offering its gifts. The Sony PCM-M10 has become one of my most trusted tools for this work. Compact, rugged, capable of high-resolution linear PCM recording (up to 96 kHz/24-bit), and remarkably power-efficient on a pair of AA batteries, the M10 is ideal for overnight drop deployments in remote locations. I pair my recorders with Clippy stereo and Lom Mikro Usi microphones fitted with fuzzy wind covers (often called windbubbles or dead cats) to minimize wind noise while preserving the delicate, open stereo image of the landscape. The entire rig is then protected inside camouflaged waterproof bags, hung or secured discreetly so that wildlife and weather can move around it undisturbed.

I often leave these recorders in the field overnight, allowing the equipment to document the full diurnal cycle: the evening insect chorus giving way to night frogs and owls, the pre-dawn stillness, the gradual awakening of the forest or meadow at first light. Readers interested in the practical details of these setups, how the rig bags are constructed, how the mics are positioned, how the M10 is configured for long unattended sessions, can find a wealth of posts on my blogs.  There you will see the M10 nestled among slash pines during approaching storms, hanging over wax myrtle branches beside brackish lagoons, and quietly documenting the living soundscape.

Once the recording is complete and digitized and the essence has been gathered (always without touching or harming the flowers) and processed in the lab, the vibrational information of the flower and the vibrational information of the living terrain begin to work together. The result is not merely additive; it can feel exponential.  When the personalized Flower Essence is applied to the body at select acupuncture points while field recordings play in the background the patient then experiences a layered, whole-system support that addresses body, emotion, mind, and spirit simultaneously.

For those navigating the profound challenges of cancer treatment and recovery, or living with other serious chronic conditions such as aortic dissection, this combined approach holds particular promise as a complementary support. Conventional care addresses the physical disease process with skill and necessity. Flower essences and site-specific field recordings offer something different yet complementary: a way to reconnect with the healing intelligence of the living Earth, to restore a sense of belonging and coherence, and to invite the body’s own regulatory systems into deeper relationship with the natural world. The goldenrod standing tall in a late-summer meadow, the sound of wind through the pines that surround it, the distant migratory birds calls, the subtle humidity of the air; all of these become part of a single medicine when consciously combined. Patients often report a greater sense of groundedness, reduced isolation, improved emotional resilience, and a renewed feeling that they are not fighting alone but are held within a larger, benevolent field of life.

I personally invite those challenged with chronic diseases, cancer, aortic dissection, connective tissue disorders, autoimmune, stroke and other long-term condition to join me on weekend and week-long adventures into the wilderness. These are not clinical programs or medical treatments. They are carefully held opportunities to step (always considering ADA accommodations), into wild places  to learn how to hunt and capture (without ever touching the flowers) the powerful flower essence energetics of native plants, and to experience the simultaneous practice of deep listening and respectful sound recording. Patients learn to sit with the plants, to feel the Dao of the landscape, to prepare essences with gratitude, and to deploy simple yet professional recording setups that preserve the full acoustic medicine of the site. The emphasis is always on relationship, reverence, and sustainable non-harm.

If this modality calls to you, if you feel the pull of the wild places and the quiet possibility that sound and flower together might support your healing journey I welcome contact. Whether you are seeking guidance on creating your own field recordings, wishing to explore specific essences prepared in this integrated way, or simply wanting to know more about upcoming wilderness adventures, reach out. The land is still singing. The recorders are ready. The flowers are waiting, untouched, to share their gifts.

In the end, this is not about technology replacing nature, nor about essences replacing medical care. It is about remembering that we are part of a living, sounding, flowering Earth, and that when we listen carefully and receive gratefully, the medicine available to us multiplies in ways we are only beginning to understand.

Living with cancer is a challenge. Nature offers us many options to still life a life of Yang Sheng quality!
